SUMMARY:MoCADA NEWSFEED Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION: Be it in New York, Paris or Bamako, the world is experiencing a paradigm shift that began in Africa. Sparked by the 2011 toppling of Egypt’s thirty-year dictator, calls for revolution echo through mass media and populate social networking newsfeeds. MoCADA’s Curatorial Series, NEWSFEED: Anonymity & Social Media in African Revolutions and Beyond, which ran from October 18, 2012 to January 20, 2013, featured a compilation of new media art, contemporary works and digital installations that investigate global interconnectivity and how anonymous parties define, construct, and support uprisings in Africa via social media. Using visual art and a short film reflecting text, images and videos that were tagged, re-tweeted, and shared virally throughout the world, the purpose of the exhibition sought to ask the question, whether so-called “revolutions” in the recent past reflect real world events or merely construct an online reality, and how digital dialogue influence global societies' relationship with Africa. To view photos and read up on the event visit MoCADA on Facebook or MoCADA.org

ADMISSION: Free Please join us for a screening of When the Drum is Beating (2011), a film by Whitney Dow. The film follows one of Haiti’s most celebrated bands, Septentrional, weaving together the lives of the band members and Haitian history up to the earthquake of January 2010. A more comprehensive picture of today’s Haiti is painted by deconstructing the context of the Haitian music scene against the backdrop of corrupt regimes and subsequent economic strife. Yet, in the end the film is a brilliant celebration of Haitian perseverance and music. As part of this special warm up for our fall Haitian film festival that is quickly approaching, we’ll be cooling down with rum punch, cola lakaye (Haitian cola), and paté. So come out, kick back and enjoy the first film screening of the Haiti Cultural Exchange Film Festival. Seating is limited; please RSVP to regine@haiticulturalx.org. This film screening is made possible, in part, by the Soul of Brooklyn Regrant program, which is supported by funding from a Rockefeller Foundation New York City Cultural Innovation Fund award and administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA).

SUMMARY:Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy presents: SOAPBOX
DESCRIPTION: Soapbox is this year’s title and theme of Ifetayo’s annual spring production. Ticket prices are affordable and range from $15-25. The event will take place at the Walt Whitman Theater at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts. Ifetayo will continue its tradition of partnering with local businesses to promote its spring performance, Soapbox. SUMMARY:Cocktails and Canvases
DESCRIPTION:On June 25th, over 200 supporters will gather at Brooklyn’s Synergy Art Gallery to view over 208 masterpieces created by the children of Maranatha School and Orphanage still ravaged by the devastation of Haiti. The occasion is the first in the event series called Cocktails and Canvases that seeks to organize young urbanites and professionals for a cause presented by Ms. Phia Presents, a premier special events firm in New York City. Synergy Art Gallery 1101-03 Fulton Street Brooklyn, NY 11238 8pm- 1am $20 Advance/$25 at the door The affair marks the closing of the exhibition which was commissioned by Filmmaker and photographer Kevin O’Hanlon who joined the Haiti relief organization, Life for the World in Maranatha, Haiti where its founder Michael Fedele has been supporting the children since 2002. O'Hanlon along with artist Richard Laurent and the Life for the World team, brought canvases and painting supplies to the orphanage and documented the children creating their very first paintings. This art exhibition captures that momentous occasion and pays tribute to the children's creative spirit, strength, and resilience in supporting their community through their artistic abilities. In addition to the exhibit and the auction there will also be special guests, live music from AFRAZZ Haitian Jazz band and Dj CEO, giveaways and refreshments. Advanced tickets are available at www.cocktailsandcanvases.eventbrite.com for $20.00 or they can be purchased at the door for $25.00 with a portion of the proceeds going to the support of the Marantha School and Orphanage.

SUMMARY:The American Laboratory and Five Myles Present: We Are Nebeneinander (We Are Side By Side) Jan 6-9 2011 @ 8pm
DESCRIPTION:The American Laboratory and FiveMyles present: We Are Nebeneinander. (We Are Side By Side). With devised text from James Joyceʼs A Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man January 6 – January 9, 2011 Performances: 8:00pm (doors open at 7:30pm.) THE AMERICAN LABORATORY is a fledgling art company with special interest in blending the boundaries of the visual and performance arts. With the companyʼs current project, the language of James Joyce provides a historical foundation for their contemporary narrative. This language is plucked from a classic novel and dropped into the original story of three students. The project incorporates video footage of Princetonʼs pastoral campus and a cardboard installation exhibiting the themes of exile, escape, and exit. Through the use of video and scenic installation art, the audience is transported to Princeton University and immersed in the fragmented story of these youths: elite, New England, Ivy-Leaguers incapable of speaking intimately to those they love most. At its core, The American Laboratory constructs innovative site-specific theatre for the Brooklyn art community. Project Director: Michael Stablein, Jr. Project Manager: Mary Laws Video Installation: Pedro Feria Pino Scenic Installation: Emily Weiskopf Cast: Todd Flaherty, Clayton Reed Ellis, Erinn Ruth “At its root, We Are Nebeneinander (We Are Side By Side.) is a love story. It is a study of the human search for things lost. The losing of love, the loser in love, and lost love. In an environment where language cannot communicate the anguish of loneliness, we seek the small places where hope is found." The American Laboratory. This project is part of the FiveMyles Space Program. FiveMyles offers the use of the gallery for deserving and innovative artistic projects, such as this production by The American Laboratory. We are particularly interested in showcasing work that has few pre-conceived ideas of the boundaries of a given art form. Saul Bolton and The Vanderbilt will be hosting a post-exhibition reception after each performance (including cocktail and dining specials). 570 Vanderbilt Avenue. Brooklyn, NY 11238 ( at Bergan Street)

For the next decade, Joseph watched as his life story paralleled that of his homeland: a quick and seemingly infinite crumbling of structure and foundation. Eight years later Joseph would board a plane from Norway to New York on a full-scholarship to study at Skidmore University. Having graduated and interned at the US Congress, Joseph returns home to Sierra Leone in June 2009 to construct a high school and journey into memories of his childhood. Directors Liat Krawczyk and Anthony Mancilla follow Joseph as he works to educate Sierra Leonean youth and revisits his extraordinary past. Vigorous and poignant, Retracing Jeneba is an exploration of Joseph Kaifala’s unwavering efforts towards education and Sierra Leoneans eagerness to regain their breath and turn toward a brighter future. SUMMARY:Writing of Home: Dr. Frank M. Chipasula and Dr. Rashidah Ismaili
DESCRIPTION: Thursday, November 18, 6:30pm - 8:00pm FREE Where: MoCADA, 80 Hanson Place, Brooklyn, (718) 230-0492 The artists' work on display in Ain't I A Woman, take their inspiration from poems in the anthology entitled, The Heinemann Book of African Women's Poetry, edited by Stella and Frank M. Chipasula. This work includes the poetry of Dr. Rashidah Ismaili, whose writing was the creative stimulus for a work in the exhibition. This group exhibition offers contemporary artistic depictions of women of African descent, focusing specifically on their interiority. Rather than examining women through the objectivity of their bodies, the artists portray African Diasporan women as active participants in their own visual representations. Both Dr. Chipasula and Dr. Ismaili will read, share and discuss the inspiration for their personal works. Dr. Frank M. Chipasula is a Malawian writer, editor and university professor. Chipasula has worked as the education attache at the Malawian embassy in Washington, D.C.Visions and Reflections (1972) was the first published prose by a Malawian writer. He will discuss his contribution to the cultural literary legacies within different African countries as well as read with Dr. Rashidah Ismaili, a writer of short stories, plays and poetry. Currently, Dr. Chipasula is a professor of Africana Studies at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Dr. Ismaili is widely anthologized, has published four collections of poems, and her plays have been performed internationally as well as nationally.

SUMMARY:Celebrate Brooklyn! AFRICAN FESTIVAL w/ KONONO NO 1
DESCRIPTION:Our annual all-day celebration of African music, food and culture builds to an ecstatic crescendo with the distortion-fueled trance music of Congolese thumb-piano wizards Konono No. 1. Dakar heavyweights Omar Pene & Super Diamono, seminal figures in the birth of the modern Senegalese sound, add a jolt of energy to the proceedings, while the distinctive voice of Zimbabwean Afro-soul diva Chiwoniso, the pan-African reggae of Meta & The Cornerstones, and the festival horns and drums from Haiti’s Djarara bring other unique flavors to the day. SUMMARY:MoCADA Exhibition: 'Aint I A Woman'
DESCRIPTION: This group exhibition offers contemporary artistic depictions of women of African descent, focusing specifically on their interiority. Rather than examining women through the objectivity of their bodies, the artists portray African Diasporan women as active participants in their own visual representations. Ain’t I A Woman features works in painting, video, installation and mixed media by damali abrams, Eric Alugas, Kimberly Becoat, Priscila De Carvalho, Andrea Chung, Elizabeth Colomba, William Mwazi, Kenya (Robinson), Phoenix Savage and Francis Simeni. Taking its title from the 1885 speech given by orator and activist Sojourner Truth, this exhibition attempts to move the conversation toward the intellectual, emotional and spiritual components in the lives of women of African descent. In addition, each featured artist is paired with an African female poet, selected from The Heinemann Book of African Women’s Poetry and uses the poets’ literary works as inspiration. The exhibition curator, Kimberli Gant, also adds a participatory component. Every visitor will receive a card to answer questions on their own perspectives of women of African descent. The finished cards will be placed on one of the gallery walls for others to view and contemplate for the duration of the exhibition.
